Seeing and experiencing the difficulties immigrant and working class families experienced when the main income earner died, Blessed Fr. Michael J. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 in New Haven, Connecticut. What he started as a simple mutual benefit society, has now grown to the the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization.
The Knights of Columbus are Catholic men of faith and men of charitable action. Membership in the association offers the opportunity for fellowship with other men of the same belief who recognize the same duty to God, to family and to neighbour, and who stand with those who share those beliefs.
Inspired by Blessed Fr. McGivney's legacy, Ed Provost from the KOC BC and Yukon State office approached men at St. Joseph’s Parish, and suggested they form their own council. It was from then that 27 parishioners got together, and founded KOC Council #9846 at St. Joseph Port Moody on June 13th 1988.
Over the years, the Knights of Columbus of St. Joseph’s Port Moody have supported the works of many charities, and have undertaken many projects around the parish. When the exterior of the rectory needed painting, the knights were there. When the trees needed to be planted along the church property, the knights dug, moved dirt, and proudly showed their green thumbs. When parishioners gathered such as for the annual picnic or pancake breakfasts, the knights flipped and served. When winter snow covered the grounds, the knights shoveled. Whenever there is a job that needs to be done, the knights are there!
